🎅 Good Morning Newsies,
We are back!
This week I caught an episode of How I Write with David Perell interviewing Byrne Hobart of The Diff.
Watching Byrne explain his process of writing a newsletter and making it high-value was so insightful it got my gears running with what I want this newsletter to be.
I want to share some lessons I got from the interview that you can use to make your newsletter high-value even if you only have 100 subscribers.
1/ Embrace being weird: This probably sounds a bit weird, but it makes so much sense. Being weird with your newsletter can help make you stand out from other newsletters out there.
I can think of one newsletter right now. Smart Nonsense, it’s a weird newsletter in a good way because it’s so unique and that is what makes it so good.
Don’t be afraid to have fun with your newsletter, it’s what will help you stand out.
2/ Content-Length: You probably read somewhere shorter is better in 2023, when it comes to creating content.
Bryne is saying that longer pieces of content work best. This makes sense, sometimes writing a longer piece will make it easier to explain something to the reader. But also knowing how long a post should be is important, you don’t want to lose the reader.
3/ Read extensively: Something I caught on very early in the interview is that he likes to learn and gain new knowledge by reading a lot.
Reading a lot, not only will this help when you are writing your newsletter. You will be able to gain a new viewpoint on what you are writing about for your reader.
Don’t be afraid to go into a rabbit hole, the next time you find something interesting because it could give you a new perspective on a topic.
