DEEP DIVE
Monetization
Today’s deep dive is about the different ways you can monetize your email newsletter.
Let’s start.
1) Recommending Newsletters: This is pretty wild that you can make money from recommending other newsletters when a person signs up for your email newsletter.
What I like about this option is that it’s pretty passive as long as you are growing your newsletter and getting new subs - those subs might subscribe to the sponsored newsletters.
With ESPs like Beehiiv, you can easily select your favorite newsletter and see if they are paying to have their newsletter recommended.
2) Ads: This is the most common way many newsletters make money, by showing ads in their newsletter (just like the ad below). Now you won’t be making bank from ads - not if you have thousands and thousands of subs.
In the last 2 weeks, you probably saw an ad in the weekly newsletter here, which again was created inside Beehiiv’s monetization program.
3) Affiliate Marketing: A popular way of making money with your newsletter is by promoting other people’s products if that person has an affiliate program for their product.
You want to ensure they are products you use or believe can help someone.
4) Products: This might be the best way to make money from your newsletter. And that is selling your product to your readers.
You don’t have to rely on sponsorships if you have a product(s) to sell and if you have engaged readers they will support you and buy from you.
5) Service/consulting: If you offer consulting or maybe have a service business.
You can make money from that if you show it to your readers whenever they are ready to use your service. A good place to add your offers is at the bottom of the newsletter.
